Stop Giving Your Power Away: You Know More Than You Think

Have you ever sat in a meeting or a conversation and felt that creeping doubt… that inner voice whispering, “I have no idea what they’re talking about — maybe I’m out of my depth here”?
It’s a common experience, especially in business. And it’s one that can quietly but powerfully erode your confidence.
I often see this happen when business owners come face to face with someone positioned as an “expert” — especially when it comes to finances. An external consultant or advisor might start throwing around technical language, and suddenly the person on the receiving end begins to feel uncertain, even though they already know the core of what’s being said.
What’s really happening isn’t a lack of knowledge — it’s a shift in perception. Somewhere along the way, we start believing that someone else must know better. And in doing so, we give our power away.
The Myth of the “Expert”
We live in a world that puts experts on a pedestal. And of course, there’s value in experience and specialisation. But there’s a difference between respecting someone’s expertise and diminishing your own.
When we assume that someone else must know better than us — simply because of their title, credentials, or confident delivery — we shut down our own inner authority.
We stop trusting ourselves.
We hold back from asking questions.
We downplay what we do know.
We get overwhelmed.
And we leave conversations feeling smaller than when we entered them.
But here’s the truth: You know more than you think. Often, the information is already there — you just need the clarity and structure to access it.
Making the Invisible Visible
In these situations, the most powerful thing we can do is strip back the complexity and get to the heart of what’s really going on.
When you pause to break things down, you often realise that you do understand what’s being discussed — you just weren’t seeing it in a way that made sense to you.
Take finances, for example. Segmenting your income and expenses, and understanding your cashflow, doesn’t require a finance degree. It requires a clear structure and a calm space to reconnect with what’s already there.
Because when you see clearly, you feel more in control. And control, in business, isn’t about knowing everything — it’s about backing yourself, asking the right questions, and trusting your ability to make informed decisions which in turn boosts your confidence.
Cashflow Isn’t Complicated — People Are
One area where I see a lot of unnecessary overwhelm is cashflow.
It’s often treated like some mysterious, complex concept — but at its heart, cashflow is just the flow of money in and out of your business.
What makes it complicated isn’t the numbers. It’s what we make those numbers mean.
The real blockages in cashflow are often emotional or behavioural, not financial:
Limiting beliefs that tell you you’re not good with money
Inaction, because you’re afraid of what you might uncover
Overaction, where you’re scattered and trying to do too much at once
Unclear boundaries, leading to late payments or uncomfortable client dynamics
Avoidance of conversations that feel too uncomfortable to face
These are deeply human experiences. They’re not financial problems — they’re personal patterns showing up in your business.
That’s why I believe the foundation of a thriving, aligned business doesn’t lie in complicated systems or outsourcing everything to someone else. It starts with you.
You Are the Expert of Your Business
Yes, you can and should ask for support. Yes, there’s value in bringing in professionals to offer their insight. But never forget: you are the expert of your own business.
No one knows your vision, your values, your clients, your cashflow patterns better than you.
Your job isn’t to have all the answers — it’s to stay connected to your own wisdom, and to work with people who help you uncover and use it.
A Final Thought
Next time you find yourself doubting what you know, take a breath. Ask yourself:
Am I giving my power away here?
Because you are capable. You are wise. And most of the time, you already have what you need — it just needs a little structure, a little support, and a lot of self-trust to come to the surface.
